The function of the oil filter is to filter out solid particles (combustion residues, metal particles, colloids, dust, etc.) in the oil and maintain the performance of the oil during the maintenance cycle. So what are the precautions for using it?
Oil filters can be divided into full-flow filters and split-flow filters according to their arrangement in the lubrication system. The full-flow filter is connected in series between the oil pump and the main oil passage to filter all the oil entering the lubrication system. A bypass valve needs to be installed so that the oil can enter the main oil passage when the filter is blocked. The split-flow filter only filters a part of the oil supplied by the oil pump, and usually has a high filtration accuracy. The oil passing through the split-flow filter enters the turbocharger or enters the oil pan. Split-flow filters can only be used in conjunction with full-flow filters. For different brands of diesel engines (such as CUMMINS, DEUTZ, DOOSAN, VOLVO, PERKINS, etc.), some are only equipped with full-flow filters, and some use a combination of two filters.
Filtration efficiency is one of the main characteristics of the oil filter, which means that the oil containing a certain number of particles of a certain size flows through the filter at a certain flow rate. The original genuine filter has high filtration efficiency, can filter impurities most efficiently, and ensure that the cleanliness of the filtered oil meets the standard. For example, the oil filter bypass valve of Volvo Penta is generally located at the filter base, and individual models are built into the filter. Non-genuine filters on the market generally do not have a built-in bypass valve. If a non-original filter is used on an engine equipped with a built-in bypass valve filter, once a blockage occurs, the oil cannot flow through the filter. Oil supply to the rotating parts that need to be lubricated later will cause component wear and cause heavy losses. Non-genuine products cannot achieve the same effect as genuine products in terms of resistance characteristics, filtration efficiency and clogging characteristics.
